Road Trip: Days 1 and 2

We pulled out of our driveway at 3:30am to begin our trip.  Within 5 minutes, an excited Elijah asked, "Are we in California yet!?"

In the first day alone, we drove 800 miles and were travelling for about 18 hours.  Today we're spending the day at my cousin's house in Forest Ranch, CA.  There is snow on the ground and I am writing on my laptop in between a cozy fire and a bright Christmas tree, inside their gorgeous house in the woods.  Basically, a pretty lovely break from the road.

Our first stop was in Eugene, OR which had been freshly covered in snow.  The drive was a little slow due to cold temperatures and the threat of ice on the roads.  We took it easy and enjoyed the view of the snow covered pines.

We didn't stop again until Grants Pass where we made the kids lunch (we packed a cooler full of food.)  Then it was straight on to Crescent City to see the Redwoods.  Once we left Oregon and entered California, we had a lot more sunshine and the snow slowly disappeared.

The Redwoods were even more impressive than I had anticipated!  I've seen pictures of them, but pictures just can't do their grandeur justice.  I tried anyway.

We stayed in the Crescent City area and checked out the view from Crescent Beach before we drove down along the coast towards my cousin's house.

By the time we hit the winding roads in the mountains it was dark so there wasn't much to look at, but the sky was clear so we could see a beautiful array of stars.

We arrived late, unloaded the car, had a glass of wine while the kids marveled over the Christmas tree, then got a glorious night of sleep.

In the morning, the kids were anxious to get outside and play in the snow.  Robin brought out an innertube from the shed and the kids were able to go sledding.  They had such a fun time.  Afterwards, we warmed up inside with hot cocoa and Christmas movies.

Did I mention my cousin Robin loves Mickey Mouse and has Mickey Mouse everything?  Ollie enjoyed sipping his cocoa from a Mickey mug and having a grilled cheese Mickey sandwich for lunch!
